Jiin Yun (CW, ‘24) was featured in the Orange County Register for her recycling program that has gone national. She started a non-profit called the Recycling Dictionary that holds workshops across Orange County to educate younger students about smart recycling practices. In addition, Jiin authored a children’s book about recycling and developed an app that offers details on whether and how to recycle more than 500 common items. Lucy Hunter (FTV, ‘26) was featured in a Daily Pilot article about her directorial debut, “You Should Be Dead,” a YouTube horror series that focuses on teens coping with loss and grief. The series is very personal to Lucy as it was inspired by the loss of her own father. Lucy started writing the show at the age of 12 and shared that the scripting has now been completed, which will amount to 44 episodes across four seasons. Science instructor and Science Olympiad coach Heather Jonson was invited by NASA to attend the launch of their Psyche mission at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The goal of the Psyche mission is to send a spacecraft to a unique metal asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.

Science instructors and Science Olympiad coaches Jessica Daniel and Heather Jonson were featured alongside their Science Olympiad students in a promotional television spot sponsored by L’Oreal Paris, which premiered during “LEGO Masters” on FOX. Milo Karnes (IA, ‘24) and Abbi Park (CW, ‘24) earned perfect scores on their AP Research exam, making them part of a select group of only 1.26% of students worldwide who received this distinction.

Jamie Jung (CW, ‘24) received a $500 Honorable Mention in the 2023 Discovery Award Competition through the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. For the competition, Jamie recited a 10-minute monologue on Marth Lum and the fight to end school segregation for Chinese Americans in the 1920’s.

Cole Fredrick (PM, ‘16), Matt Jarnagin (FTV, ‘15), Matisse Pasillas (FTV, ‘15), Nick Stone (PM, ‘15), and Chris Trimmer (IM, ‘12) performed on a Virgin Voyage cruise with their band Undecided Future. Undecided Future is an urban pop band with influences from Earth, Wind & Fire, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars, among others. On Virgin Voyage, they have visited Spain, Italy, France, Ibiza, and many other locations throughout 2023.

Social Studies instructor and Model United Nations club advisor Lana Sawalha was named an Outstanding Educator by the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Ms. Sawalha received this honor due to her excellent educational leadership skills and her efforts to enter multiple OCSA student projects in the 2023 National Discovery Award Competition, which gives students in grades 4-12 the opportunity to use their creative talents to tell the remarkable stories of unsung heroes who have inspired change.

Ethan Baker (IA, ‘26) won the Junior Division Gold Medal at the Orange Coast Mixed Foil Competition in Santa Ana. Foil is one of three types of weaponry used in the sport of fencing.

Noah Flores (VA, ‘28) and his baseball team, The Dirtbags, won the SoCal Intermediate Tournament of Champions in June, capping off their undefeated season 18-0. In July, Noah also took Third Place in the 13-and-under Small Ball category at the United States Handball Association (USHA) Junior Three Wall National Tournament. In addition, he received First Place in the Big Ball Doubles category of the Junior Vasquez State Three Wall Championship.

Creative Writing Conservatory instructor Megan Friess had her teaching narrative, titled “Teaching Rhetoric Without a License,” published in a collection called “Threshold Conscripts: Rhetoric and Composition Teaching Assistantships.” The collection explores the diversity and complexity of universities through the lens of teaching assistants (TA) and how different collegiate programs help shape TA identities and practices.

Jordan Held (FTV, ‘23) was awarded the Outstanding Young Filmmaker Short at the 2023 Newport Beach Film Festival for her film “Ovaryacting.” She also won the Young Filmmakers Competition at the 2023 Austin Film Festival. Olivia Le (CW, ‘25) won the AutoEthnographer Student Scholarship for her collection of poems, “Born from Boat People.” She received a monetary award, publication, and was offered many other opportunities, such as participation in the AutoEthnographer podcast and the chance to help develop a column/feature for their magazine. Olivia was also the recipient of the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize offered by Beyond Baroque. This prize is open to high school students of color in California and awarded based on poetry/essay submissions that align with Amanda Gormon’s commitment to social change. Lastly, Olivia was asked by Get Lit to record a poem she wrote for the Women’s Journey Foundation at Load Bearing Studios in Santa Ana. This poem will be sent out to at-risk girls nationwide.

Ballet, Pilates, & Yoga instructor Lauren Farris was accepted into the American Ballet Theater (ABT)’s invite-only Teaching Training Intensive at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In the program, Ms. Farris will learn the theory and principles of the National Training Curriculum within the five levels of ballet.

Julie Mejer (IA, ‘29) won First Place in her age group for piano at the LA Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition. She also won Third Place at the Charleston 19th Century Music Competition and a Special Mention in her age group for the London International Music Competition.

Lauren Gee (VA, ‘27) was granted a summer internship with the Singapore Wildcat Action Group as an illustrator. She worked on several different campaigns creating flyers and posters that support the group’s mission to protect endangered species, restore rainforests, and much more.

Members of the OCSA Robotics Team were invited to compete at the One World Showcase Event at University of California, Berkeley. Five teams from OCSA competed against 115 other teams from around the country. One of the five teams, Z Squared, was composed of Olivia Lee (VA, ‘25), Sunny Li (IM, ‘24), and Samantha Park (IA, ‘25), making them one of the less than 5% of teams that were made of all female members. Avery Mizrahi (IA, ‘24) was a recipient of the Gold Congressional Award, which recognizes youth leaders who complete 400 volunteer hours, 200 personal development hours, and 200 physical fitness hours. This award recognizes Avery’s many achievements, which include being President of the Southern California Youth Neuroscience Association (SCYNA) and other community service organizations, her scientific research, language learning, and preparation for her 2023 dance tour across Europe.

Kiara Widjaja (IA, ‘27) was second runner-up in the category of Amateur Tissu (Ages 13-14) at the 11th West Coast Aerial Arts Festival. This four-day competition recognizes the athletic skills and dedication of young Aerial Arts performers.

Tobias Izenberg (CW, ‘23), Emma Kay (PM, ‘23), Emily Kim (CW, ‘24), and Jocelyn Wang (PM, ‘23) were featured in the Orange County Register article “Pictures of the Year” in December 2023. The picture, which was featured in February Favorites, showed the students’ celebration when they won against El Dorado High School at the Orange County Mock Trial Competition, hosted by the Constitutional Rights Foundation at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana. Cole Frederick (IM, ‘16), Matthew Jarnagin (FTV, ‘15), Matisse Pasillas (FTV, ‘15), Nicholas Stone (IM, ‘15), and Christopher Trimmer (IM, ‘12), also known as pop group Undecided Future, received rave reviews from Virgin Voyage Entertainment Director Jeremy Larochelle for their five Virgin Voyage cruise bookings since 2022. They will sail to Greece for the second time in June 2024 to perform their original songs and some covers.

Aryan Sharma (CW, ‘27) participated in the 69th Annual Orange County Science and Engineering Fair (OCSEF) hosted at Chapman University. Aryan took home first place in Category 1000 – Botany and was awarded the Dave Walkington Memorial Award for excellence in Botany, in addition to winning the RICOH award for next-generation technology innovation. He was also nominated to represent Orange County in the International Science & Engineering Fair, in which he was a finalist. Aryan spent five days networking and collaborating with other students who attended the event.

Alexandria Cartagena (DM, ‘26) earned her 5th degree black belt in Taekwondo and was invited to teach at the National Taekwondo Academy in Aliso Viejo. Also known as a “5th Dan”, Alexandria’s level in the Korean martial art gave her the ability to mentor other black and brown belt students during the academic year.

Stephen Amsler (Elective Taekwondo Teacher) traveled to the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea to test for his eighth-degree black belt. The process took months and involved a rigorous protocol that included a written 7,000 word thesis, a Board review of his curriculum vitae, submitting a five-hour work-out session, participating in a physical test with three Grand Master Instructors from the Board, and a video submission review from the Kukkiwon Technical Committee. Mr. Amsler successfully completed all the 8th degree black belt requirements and received Grand Master Instructor Status. There are only 305 8th degree black belts that reside in the United States – a one in a million percentile of the country’s population.

The following students attended the National History Day (NHD) Awards Ceremony. Five students advanced to State and were given the opportunity to compete in Sacramento with nearly 1,600 other talented students nationwide. Samantha Bailey (VA, ‘26) and Emily Yi (VA, ‘26) won the National Qualifier for their research, titled “Nauseating a Nation: How the Jungle Turned the Stomach of America Into Legislation,” and will represent California in the National Championships at the University of Maryland.

Lisa Cho (VA, ‘25), Joseph Ho (IM, ‘24), Micah Lewison (CW, ‘24) and Brian Stevens (Director of Community Engagement) attended the second annual Thompson Autism and Neurodevelopmental Center at CHOC Conference in late March. Lisa, Joseph, and Micah are members of the Neurodiversity Club at OCSA. The conference featured keynote presentations, sessions, and panels that focused on community, inclusion of adults with disabilities, and teacher & student skills.

OCSA’s Model United Nations (MUN) Team took part in the Laguna Beach Invitational MUN Conference at Laguna Beach High School. Under the guidance of Lana Sawalha (History Instructor and MUN Advisor), five students received Winning Gavels (Best Delegate Award).

The following OCSA Advanced Placement Chemistry students collectively placed fourth out of 33 Orange County schools in the local section exam for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. The top four scorers will be honored at an awards dinner presented by the Orange County Section of the American Chemical Society. This local exam is the first stepping stone of many, with an opportunity to compete internationally.

Kaitlyn Molletti (CW, ‘27) submitted a play to the Young Writers Project, an outreach program through the Theatre of NOTE in Los Angeles that works with high school students on developing and producing theatre pieces. Kaitlyn’s ten-minute play was chosen to be performed at the theatre.

Noah Granados (ACT, ‘23), Jordan Held (FTV, ‘23), and Caleb Malis (IA, ‘23) were honored by The American Pavilion’s 2024 Emerging Filmmaker Showcase for their work on “Ovaryacting.” The film was selected and announced at the Cannes-hosted The American Pavilion showcase and screened at the American Library in Paris.

Jim Stevens (FTV, ‘06 and Elective Instructor) directed the documentary “A Fight to Save Lives” in collaboration with Magic House Anaheim and the awareness project Facing Fentanyl. The film focuses on addiction recovery and promoting awareness of the fentanyl drug crisis in the United States. Mr. Stevens’ directorial project premiered at OCSA’s FTV Winter Cineplex. William Bolin (CV, ‘24), Edward Chen (IA, ‘24), Amy Jong (IM, ‘24), and Jamie Jung (CW, ‘24) were selected among 625 semifinalists to advance to the final round of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars competition.

Edward Chen (IA, ‘24) was named a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts for demonstrating academic and artistic excellence. Having first been named a YoungArts Winner for Dance in 2023, Edward was one of just twenty students selected in 2024 as the nation’s most talented young artists.

OCSA’s Junior Thespian Troupe 6826 participated in the Junior Thespian Festival hosted on OCSA’s campus. All participating middle school students received Superior Thespy awards, while also receiving two Judge’s Choice Awards and one First Place title as a group. Violet Adams (VA, ‘24) received a Gold Award for her work in the Girl Scouts of America. Violet was awarded this prestigious title for her leadership within her troop and for completing a project that received high remarks.

Luke Shin (VA, ‘25), Ella Tran (VA, ‘25), and Olivia Yun (VA, ‘25) were featured at the LGBTQ Center of Orange County’s annual Gala, where they created a live painting that auctioned for nearly $3,000. Fifty percent of the money raised was given to their club, Community Canvas, which aims to uplift and encapsulate the stories and cultures of underrepresented communities in Orange County through the use of murals.

Kelly Halliburton (CW, ‘25) was selected as a Save The Children’s National Youth Champion. The National Youth Champion program is a new opportunity for young activists to make a bigger impact for kids and stay committed to making a difference in their communities. Kelly, alongside five other champions, were invited to Washington D.C. to meet with Capitol Hill lawmakers and leaders of Save The Children.

Sumin Cho (IM, ‘25), Micah Lai (FTV, ‘25), Matthew Martono (IM, ‘25), Liam Ramos (IM, ‘24), Joshua Ta (IA, ‘24), and Nathan Tatsuta (IM, ‘24) competed in the 2024 VEX Robotics California State Championship event. Together as Team Charles 92782A, they qualified for this event by winning the Excellence Award at an earlier tournament in their season.

Vanessa Cortez, OCSA conservatory instructor and Thespians director, received her certification in Ethnic Studies Education from the University of California, Riverside. Her achievement will help create a classroom environment that represents diverse student perspectives, produces culturally competent and global citizens, and celebrates diversity as a commitment to greater social change.

The following OCSA Honors Chemistry students earned Fifth Place among all Orange County schools for their combined scores in the First-Year American Chemical Society (ACS) competition. They received a team plaque at the ACS banquet.
